What Is GlyNAC? Glycine, Cysteine and Glutathione

What glutathione actually does

Most people have heard of antioxidants as something you eat. Glutathione is different: your body makes it, in nearly every cell, continuously.

It does three main jobs. It neutralizes reactive oxygen species, the unstable molecules produced as a byproduct of turning food into energy. It supports the liver's detoxification pathways, helping bind compounds so they can be cleared. And it helps recycle other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, so they can go back to work instead of being used up.

That makes glutathione less like a nutrient and more like infrastructure. When it runs low, a lot of unrelated systems feel it at once.

Why glutathione falls with age

Glutathione is a tripeptide, which means it is built from three amino acids: glycine, cysteine, and glutamate.

Work from Baylor College of Medicine looked at why older adults show lower glutathione and found something specific. It was not that the enzymes doing the assembly had failed. It was that the raw material was short. Older participants had measurably lower availability of glycine and cysteine, and their cells could not build glutathione fast enough to keep up with demand.

That reframes the problem. If the machinery still works and only the inputs are missing, then restoring the inputs should restore output. That is the hypothesis GlyNAC was built to test.

What GlyNAC means

GlyNAC is not an ingredient. It is shorthand for a combination: Glycine plus N-AcetylCysteine, taken together.

The logic is that supplying either one alone leaves the other as the bottleneck. Glycine without a cysteine source, or cysteine without glycine, still leaves the cell waiting on the missing piece. Supplying both at once removes both constraints.

A note on cysteine forms

Cysteine appears on supplement labels in more than one form. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is cysteine with an acetyl group attached, which improves its stability. L-cysteine is the amino acid itself. Both are cysteine sources; the published GlyNAC trials specifically used NAC. Worth knowing when you are reading a label and comparing what you are holding against what was studied.

What the research found

The most cited work comes from Baylor College of Medicine, published across several papers.

A 2021 open-label pilot in Clinical and Translational Medicine followed a small group of older adults taking glycine and NAC for 24 weeks. Participants showed corrected glutathione deficiency and improvements in oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, inflammation markers, insulin resistance, endothelial function, muscle strength, and cognition.

A 2023 randomized clinical trial in The Journals of Gerontology: Series A was the more rigorous follow-up: 24 older adults, 16 weeks, GlyNAC versus placebo. It reported similar directional results, including improvements in glutathione, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, gait speed, and body composition.

Two things are worth saying plainly about this body of work.

The doses were large. The trials used weight-based dosing that works out to several grams per day of each amino acid for a typical adult, not milligrams. Any comparison against a general daily formula has to account for that gap.

The trials were small. Twenty-four participants is enough to be interesting and not enough to be conclusive. Larger and longer independent replication is what would move this from promising to established.

Where glycine and cysteine show up in food

Before reaching for a bottle, it is worth knowing where these come from.

Glycine is concentrated in collagen-rich foods: bone broth, skin-on cuts, connective tissue, gelatin. Modern eating patterns that favor lean muscle meat and skip the rest tend to be low in it, which is part of why glycine intake has drifted down.

Cysteine shows up in eggs, poultry, garlic, onions, legumes, and Brussels sprouts. Whey protein is a well-known source.

Diet alone rarely reaches the intakes used in the trials, but it is the base everything else sits on.

How to read a formula

If you are comparing products, a few things matter more than the label design.

Both pieces present. A glutathione-support formula that includes glycine but no cysteine source, or the reverse, leaves the bottleneck in place.

Can I just take glutathione directly?
